Is there a legal requirement for banns of marriage to be published for CofE organised weddings?

This comes from the story of the Sussex vicar arrested for arranging 'sham' marriages. The charges refer to his allegedly performing marriage ceremonies without having first published banns of marriage. The vicar at my church conducts a large number of weddings without having published banns of marriage.

  1. You'll have to check state laws on that one. Weddings are usually treated very leniently unless there is some kind of fraud involved
  2. Yes, the banns have to have been up for at least two Sunday services before the wedding. Edit: With C of E services they are read out at the Sunday service.
  3. How do you know? the banns are read for three weeks as far as I know, same as the register office - how often do you nip in there to check the banns are up?
  4. no. there is no legal requirement.
