Alabama reported 115,000 job openings in June 2025, down from 123,000 in May, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job openings rate for the state was 4.9 percent in June compared to 5.3 percent the previous month. Nationally, the job openings rate stood at 4.4 percent in June and 4.6 percent in May.

Regional Commissioner Victoria G. Lee commented on the figures: “The job openings rate in Alabama was 4.9 percent in June and 5.3 percent in the previous month.”

The ratio of unemployed persons per job opening in Alabama was recorded at 0.7 for June, which is lower than the national measure of 0.9 unemployed persons per job opening during that period. Across the country, twenty-five states and the District of Columbia had ratios below this national average; eighteen states were above it, while seven matched it.

Alabama saw a total of 73,000 hires and 66,000 separations during June—unchanged hires but fewer separations compared to May’s figures of 73,000 hires and 77,000 separations. Over the twelve months ending with June, monthly averages were calculated at 77,000 hires and 73,000 separations.

Of those who separated from employment in Alabama during June, there were 40,000 quits and 21,000 layoffs or discharges—down from May’s numbers of 54,000 quits but up slightly from May’s layoffs/discharges figure of 19,000. Over the past year quits averaged about 48,000 per month (ranging between forty thousand and fifty-four thousand), while layoffs/discharges averaged twenty-two thousand per month (with a range between nineteen thousand and twenty-seven thousand).

The next release for State Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey estimates covering July is scheduled for September 17.

Statistics presented are drawn from JOLTS—the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey—which provides insights into labor demand as well as turnover rates across states using model-based estimates that incorporate several sources including sample surveys and employment statistics programs.

Definitions used include: job openings as positions open on the last business day of each reference month; hires as all payroll additions within that month; separations as all departures from payroll by type—including quits or layoffs/discharges—with other types not published at state level due to their small share.

Additional technical details about these estimates can be found through resources provided by BLS upon request.
