Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to invest at least $11 billion in Georgia to expand its cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure. This investment will support the development of new data centers in Butts and Douglas counties, as said on Amazon’s website.
According to AWS, the company supports education and career development through initiatives such as Girls’ Tech Day and Think Big Spaces, which aim to inspire student interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) fields. In Georgia, AWS also offers technical training programs like the Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Workshop at Augusta Technical College. These efforts are part of AWS’s broader commitment to building a skilled workforce prepared for future demands.
The $11 billion investment in new data centers across Butts and Douglas counties represents the largest of its kind in Georgia’s history. This initiative is expected to create at least 550 direct technical jobs and support thousands more in construction, logistics, and related sectors. The investment builds on Amazon’s existing economic presence in Georgia, where it already supports over 78,000 direct and indirect jobs.
In 2023, Amazon announced its first solar project in Georgia, located in Morgan County. The 92-megawatt facility will generate clean energy to support Amazon’s local operations, including data centers. This project aligns with Amazon’s broader sustainability goal of powering 100% of its operations with renewable energy by 2025.
AWS is a subsidiary of Amazon and is recognized as one of the world’s leading providers of cloud computing and AI infrastructure. It powers mission-critical workloads for startups, enterprises, and governments globally. Founded in 1994, Amazon employs more than 1.5 million people worldwide across its diverse business operations.
