World-renowned pianist Angela Hewitt will perform at Hodgson Concert Hall on October 26 at 3 p.m. as part of the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center’s 30th anniversary season. The concert program features works spanning several centuries, including selections from Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier” and Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24.
Hewitt, recognized for her interpretations of Bach, previously appeared at Hodgson Concert Hall in 1996 during the opening week of the Performing Arts Center, School of Music, and Georgia Museum of Art. At that time, she was a soloist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Robert Schumann’s piano concerto.
Her reputation as a leading Bach interpreter is supported by her award-winning recordings and her Bach Odyssey project, where she performed all of Bach’s keyboard works across four continents. The upcoming program at UGA reflects this focus, including preludes and fugues by Bach, followed by fugues from Mendelssohn, Shostakovich, and Barber, and concluding with Brahms’ work.
A free pre-performance talk by Assistant Professor Emely Phelps will take place in Ramsey Concert Hall from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m.
The concert is supported by Patricia and Daniel Minkler and Murray and Doris Tillman.
