The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann, will perform at the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center’s Hodgson Concert Hall on November 14 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is part of the UGA Presents series and will feature Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, known as the “Choral” symphony.
Stutzmann will be joined by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, directed by Norman Mackenzie, along with soloists Christina Nilsson (soprano), Rhianna Cockrell (mezzo-soprano), Siyabonga Maqungo (tenor), and Leon Košavić (baritone).
The program will open with two works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The first is the Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins and String Orchestra, BWV 1043, featuring David Coucheron, ASO concertmaster, and Lauren Roth, acting associate concertmaster. This will be followed by Bach’s Cantata No. 56, “Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen,” performed by baritone Leon Košavić and the ASO Chorus.
After intermission, the orchestra will present Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Its final movement includes a setting of Friedrich Schiller’s poem “Ode to Joy.”
