Canton and Suwanee have been named Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) communities by the Georgia Main Street Program, which is part of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This designation is given to cities that have demonstrated strong results in revitalizing their downtown areas, promoting economic development, and encouraging community innovation.

The GEMS designation is awarded to cities that have shown excellence in using the Main Street Approach. This includes preserving local character while also supporting economic growth. Canton and Suwanee were recognized for their efforts in making their downtowns vibrant centers for their regions.

Suwanee was noted for its active public spaces and progressive planning, while Canton was recognized for its progress in supporting small businesses, organizing community events, and creating a strong sense of place. Their selection for the GEMS program is seen as a reflection of their leadership and commitment to building strong downtowns.

“These cities have shown what’s possible when local leadership, community engagement, and strategic planning come together,” said Cherie Bennett, Director of the Office of Downtown Development at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. “We are proud to welcome Canton and Suwanee into the GEMS family and look forward to the continued impact they will make across the state.”

GEMS communities are considered the leading Main Street programs in Georgia and serve as examples for other cities interested in improving their downtown areas through economic development focused on preservation. These communities meet high performance standards and help advance the goals of the Main Street movement.
