Grammy Award-winning mandolinist Chris Thile is scheduled to perform at the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center on October 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. Thile, known for his work as a singer, songwriter, composer, and MacArthur Fellow, is recognized for his contributions to music through bands such as Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek.

Thile has received praise from major media outlets. The Guardian described him as “that rare being: an all-round musician,” while NPR called him a “genre-defying musical genius.” He has collaborated with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Fiona Apple, and Brad Mehldau. Between 2016 and 2020, he hosted the public radio show “Live from Here.”

The program in Athens will feature selections from Thile’s solo career. This includes pieces from his recording of J.S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas; the second volume of this work is expected to be released on November 7. The concert will also showcase Thile’s blend of classical, folk, and improvisational music.

In the past year, Thile toured with Nickel Creek following their 2023 album “Celebrants” and performed ATTENTION!, a narrative song cycle for mandolin and orchestra. His solo performances are noted for pushing the boundaries of contemporary music.

Support for this performance comes from Scott and Gale Wilson, Deanna and Steven Jones, and Dr. Janice Simon.
