The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced investments exceeding $320 million to advance artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives under the Genesis Mission. The funding supports efforts to build an integrated American Science and Security Platform, which aims to increase the productivity and impact of national science and engineering activities over the next decade.

“Thanks to President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut, the Department of Energy is proud to advance AI investments to ensure American technological leadership and accelerate scientific discovery,” said DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil. “By investing in the American Science Cloud and the Transformational AI Model Consortium we are creating the foundational technologies and AI-ready data sets that will enable the success of the Genesis Mission.”

The DOE’s plan includes four main initiatives:

– The American Science Cloud (AmSC) will serve as a platform for hosting and distributing AI models and scientific data. This infrastructure is intended to help national laboratories, industry partners, and researchers access and utilize DOE’s scientific data.
– The Transformational AI Models Consortium (ModCon) will focus on developing self-improving AI models using DOE resources. Teams involved will create capabilities applicable across different areas of science and engineering.
– Fourteen projects in robotics and automation are planned to transform laboratory environments with intelligent systems that use embodied AI, advanced automation, and robotics.
– Thirty-seven foundational AI awards will support projects that organize large datasets and develop improved AI models based on experimental data. These efforts are expected to enhance how AI analyzes data from experiments, simulations, and observational studies.

According to the DOE, these investments align with recent federal appropriations aimed at supporting “AI for science” programs.
