Approximately 56 workers at Discovery World, a science museum in Milwaukee, have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union). The decision follows an organizing campaign where employees sought fair compensation, career advancement opportunities, and a greater say in workplace decisions.
Adante Balke, IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative, commented on the outcome: “Congratulations to the Discovery World workers on making their voices heard and officially winning their union election. These dedicated employees are coming together to demand respect, fair wages, better benefits, and greater transparency in promotions and hiring. By standing united, they are now preparing to bargain collectively for a stronger future.”
With this vote completed, the newly unionized group will begin negotiating their first contract. Their goals include securing improvements in wages and benefits, expanding career opportunities, and ensuring that concerns can be raised without fear of retaliation. Collective bargaining is expected to provide them with a formal voice in decisions affecting their jobs.
During the organizing process, some workers expressed concerns about management’s actions. These included allegations of anti-union tactics aimed at discouraging unionization efforts and the termination of an employee who supported the union.
Discovery World staff play an important role in supporting interactive exhibits, special events, and educational programs at the museum. Their work is seen as vital to maintaining Discovery World as a destination for families and students.

The IAM Union represents around 600,000 active and retired members across various industries including aerospace, defense, airlines, shipbuilding, railroad transit, healthcare, automotive sectors in both the United States and Canada.
