Emory Healthcare has been recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a Joy in Medicine organization, receiving bronze level distinction for its initiatives to reduce physician burnout and promote well-being. The award was presented at the American Conference on Physician Health held in Boston earlier this month.

The AMA’s Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program honors hospitals, health systems, and medical groups that implement strategies to address clinician burnout. This year, 109 organizations were acknowledged nationwide.

Evan Thoman, chief well-being officer at Emory Healthcare, stated: “This recognition represents exceptional progress already underway at Emory Healthcare to reduce burnout and elevate professional fulfillment among physicians. We are honored to receive this recognition, yet we know there is more work ahead to create a practice environment where every physician can thrive.”

Emory Healthcare has implemented system-wide efforts aimed at supporting caregivers and improving team dynamics with the goal of enhancing patient care. According to Krystyna Morgan, director of the Emory Office of Well-Being (EmWELL): “The Joy in Medicine recognition reflects the collaborative efforts between many teams and parts of the organization that are required to create the culture of well-being. We appreciate the innovative approaches our teams have taken to decrease opportunities for burnout.”

Burnout among U.S. physicians reached 62.8% during 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic but declined to 45.2% by 2023. However, these rates remain higher than those seen among other American workers, highlighting an ongoing need for support.

Since its inception in 2019, the AMA program has recognized over 200 organizations nationally for their work in advancing clinician well-being; each designation remains valid for two years.
