The Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) is developing a new Statewide Historic Preservation Plan to guide preservation efforts for historic sites across Georgia. The plan, which will span from 2027 to 2036, is required by the National Park Service under the National Historic Preservation Act.

The current plan, covering 2022-2026, will expire at the end of 2026. The updated version will include a planning process aimed at engaging a wide range of stakeholders and residents. It will also assess the condition of historic resources in Georgia, identify issues and opportunities, set goals based on community feedback, and outline measurable actions to achieve these objectives.

Public input is being sought through an online survey open until November 28, 2025. In addition to virtual sessions that will be announced later, five public information events are scheduled throughout the fall in Atlanta, Macon, Gainesville, Camilla, and Savannah.

The DCA encourages all interested parties to participate in shaping the future of historic preservation in Georgia. “We invite members of the public to participate in the development of the new plan,” said officials from the Historic Preservation Division.

For more information about participating in the survey or attending events related to the new Statewide Historic Preservation Plan, individuals are directed to visit the department’s website.
