Georgia Power is preparing for potential damage and power outages as Winter Storm Fern approaches Georgia. The storm is expected to bring significant snow, ice, strong winds, and subfreezing temperatures over the weekend. More than 10,000 personnel from Georgia Power, contracting companies, and partner utilities in Florida and other states are ready to assist with the response.
Forecasts indicate that freezing rain and low temperatures could cause ice to accumulate on tree branches, increasing the risk of branches falling onto power lines. Even small amounts of ice can lead to outages, with risks rising as accumulation increases. Winds may also contribute to trees or limbs falling into power lines.
Georgia Power has been tracking the storm for nearly a week and will continue relocating crews closer to areas where damage is likely. This approach aims to allow flexibility and a safe response once conditions permit. After the storm passes, crews will assess damages, clear vegetation, assign resources, and make repairs. The company states that teams are prepared to work continuously until power is restored.
Customers are encouraged by Georgia Power to prepare for possible extended outages if Winter Storm Fern causes widespread damage or creates hazardous conditions that delay restoration efforts. The company urges customers to follow emergency management advice, prioritize safety, and stay informed.
