Georgians are continuing to deal with the effects of Winter Storm Fern, which has brought rain, icy conditions, high winds, and possible tornadoes to parts of the state. Georgia Power reports that since the storm began, power has been restored to about 70,000 customers. This work is being carried out by a team of 10,000 personnel from Georgia Power, contract companies, and partner utilities.

The crews remain active as weather conditions continue to change. Additional outages have occurred today due to ongoing severe weather linked to the storm.

Georgia Power is reminding residents about safety risks after storms. The company states: “Georgia Power reminds customers that dangerous conditions exist following a storm, and to always heed the advice of local, state, and federal emergency authorities in storm-affected areas.”

After the storm passes, Georgia Power offers several safety tips:
– Downed power lines may be hidden by debris or trees.
– Portable generators should be used according to manufacturer instructions and never indoors.
– People should not touch downed wires or try to remove tree branches from power lines.
– Standing water or wet ground near downed lines could be electrified.
– Chain link fences might conduct electricity if touched by a downed line.
– Motorists are advised to watch for utility crews working on roadsides and follow guidance from officials and the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Severe cold is expected in the days following Winter Storm Fern with temperatures remaining below freezing for several days. Customers are encouraged to stay alert for changing weather and use resources provided by Georgia Power at https://www.georgiapower.com/save.html for tips on reducing energy costs during cold weather.
