The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) issued a statement on Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada, expressing appreciation for the service and sacrifice of military veterans. The union emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting veterans within its membership.
In the message, IAM International President Brian Bryant stated: “On this Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada – and every day – we take a moment to honor and thank all those who have served our nation. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the women and men who have been on the front lines defending our freedom, protecting our democracy, and the ideals that unite us. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to service represent the best of all of us.”
Bryant highlighted that many veterans continue their dedication after returning home by contributing to their communities and workplaces. “The same dedication that drives our veterans to defend our nation is what motivates them to build a better future for working families when they return home. Their leadership, discipline, and sense of unity strengthen our union and inspire everyone to keep fighting for dignity, justice, and respect at work,” he said.
This year marked a significant milestone for IAM as it became the first labor union officially recognized as a National Veterans Service Organization (VSO) by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). According to Bryant, “Through the IAM Veteran Services Program, IAM became the first and only union officially recognized as a National Veterans Service Organization (VSO) by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This historic designation highlights our union’s commitment to supporting those who have served in the armed forces. It ensures that IAM military veterans and their families now have direct access to essential benefits, trusted representation, and a strong advocate helping them navigate the system they have earned with honor.”
Bryant concluded his message with words of gratitude: “To all IAM veterans and every veteran: Thank you! Your courage and service remind us what true solidarity looks like. We may never fully repay the sacrifice you have made, but we can – and must – honor it: by supporting each other, fighting for peace and equity, and ensuring that every veteran and their family receive the care, opportunities, and respect they deserve.”
He added that these sentiments are shared on behalf of the entire IAM Executive Council.
