IAM Union leaders recently visited the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center (W3) to engage with members attending organizing and young worker leadership classes. The visit was made by IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes and Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen.
During their time at the center, Cervantes and Johnsen participated in Organizing I classes conducted in both Spanish and English, as well as sessions of the Young Workers Leadership Program. Attendees included students from various parts of North America who gathered to improve their organizing skills and strengthen their commitment to growing the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
Dora Cervantes emphasized the importance of offering organizing education in Spanish, stating that it is essential for all members to have access to tools necessary for leadership roles. “Her visit amplified the IAM’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, education, and empowering members at every level of the union,” according to a statement released by the organization.
Richie Johnsen met with organizers and young workers during his visit. He acknowledged their dedication and enthusiasm, especially given how close it was to the holiday season.
Participants in the Young Workers program said that having union leaders present reinforced their sense of belonging within the labor movement. They felt affirmed that they have a seat at the table.
