IAM union members at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico have voted to maintain their union representation, rejecting a decertification effort led by the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation. The vote was seen as a significant decision for the aircraft technicians at the Aguadilla facility, who have been seeking a collective bargaining agreement with management.

The workers and their supporters across Puerto Rico have continued to call on Lufthansa Technik to negotiate a contract that reflects their skills and role in aviation safety. In May 2022, over 200 mechanics and related employees joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), aiming for improved working conditions and job security. However, negotiations stalled, prompting IAM to request federal mediation from the National Mediation Board in 2023. Verdi, the German union representing Lufthansa workers in Europe, also called on Lufthansa AG to help resolve the dispute.

The decertification attempt followed ongoing delays in contract talks that have lasted nearly three years. During this period, Lufthansa Technik has continued operations while workers have sought recognition of their contributions through a formal agreement.

“Lufthansa Technik must now come to the table ready to negotiate a contract that honors these workers’ skills and contributions,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “The workers have spoken loudly and clearly: they want respect, they want stability, and they want a fair contract. The IAM will not rest until they get the contract they deserve.”

“This vote is a powerful testament to what solidarity can achieve,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “Lufthansa Technik workers stood together against outside interference and made it clear that they want a strong union fighting for them at the table. Now it’s time for the company to respect that mandate and bargain in good faith.”

“Our members in Puerto Rico showed tremendous resolve in the face of intimidation and delay tactics,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “They know their worth, and they know that union representation is the path to better wages, safer working conditions, and a more secure future. Their unity is inspiring, and the IAM is with them every step of the way.”

Ilianalyn Delgado, an aircraft mechanic at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico, stated: “We stayed united because we know what we bring to this company. We keep these aircraft flying safely. We deserve respect, a voice on the job, and a contract that reflects our work. This vote shows we’re not backing down.”

The IAM has urged Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico management to end its delaying tactics and return to negotiations prepared to reach an agreement with its workforce.
