IAM Union members and labor allies from around the United States gathered in Baltimore for the 2026 AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil and Human Rights Conference. The event, which lasted four days, focused on economic justice, voting rights, and equality for workers.
The conference, held under the theme “Honoring Our History — Fighting for Our Future,” included plenary sessions, workshops, and panels addressing current issues affecting workers. Topics discussed included the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, changes to federal services under the present administration, and union-led support models for immigrant workers.
Several members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Executive Council attended. These included IAM International President Brian Bryant, General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes, Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan, Resident General Vice President Jody Bennett, and Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez.
During an IAM Caucus meeting at the conference, members discussed their experiences over the week. They reflected on renewed motivation and shared their commitment to bringing lessons learned back to their local unions.
Brian Bryant stated: “I am inspired by the turnout from our membership at this important conference. As Dr. King taught us, we must embrace this significant moment in history and move forward to ensure workers receive justice and dignity. Participating in this conference ensures IAM members continue to honor Dr. King’s legacy by standing up for equality, democracy, and the rights of all working people.”
At a gala during the event, Dora Cervantes presented the Bill Lucy Eyes on the Prize Award to Metropolitan Baltimore Labor Council President Courtney Jenkins. This award recognizes young union leaders who motivate their peers.
Nicole Fears, IAM Human Rights Director, said: “This moment calls for courage guided by love. IAM members are stepping beyond the shop floor and rising together as Human Rights leaders.”
