Dr. Marcus Plescia has been named the new district health director for Fulton County, according to an announcement from the Georgia Department of Public Health. His appointment will take effect on November 3, 2025.
Dr. Plescia holds a Medical Degree, a Master of Public Health, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his Family Medicine training at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. With more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Plescia has worked in diverse healthcare settings serving homeless, urban-poor, and rural underserved populations.
Most recently, Dr. Plescia served as Deputy Assistant Secretary and Director of the Office of Science and Medicine at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Prior to that role, he was Chief Medical Officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), where he provided support and advice to state public health leaders across the country.

Dr. R. Chris Rustin will continue as interim district health director during Dr. Plescia’s transition period through December 2025.
