Mayor Vince R. Williams of Union City, Georgia, has highlighted the positive impact of Amazon’s investments on local communities. He said that these investments have provided residents with honest employment opportunities, contributing to family stability and an improved quality of life. This statement was included in Amazon’s Policy News & Views report.
“Amazon provided residents with honest employment, where people can secure a job, be able to take care of families, and have a good quality of life,” said R. Williams.
According to Oxford Economics, Amazon fulfillment centers contribute significantly to local economies by driving job creation, increasing wages, and enhancing workforce participation. The analysis indicates that areas hosting Amazon facilities experience notable economic improvements, including reduced unemployment rates and decreased reliance on public assistance.
Since 2010, Amazon has invested $23.8 billion in Georgia across more than 50 sites statewide. Oxford Economics reports that these investments have added $25.5 billion to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and have lowered local unemployment in Fulton County by 1.3 percentage points. This data highlights Amazon’s substantial and enduring economic influence throughout metro Atlanta.
In a broader context, across 55 U.S. counties where Amazon has created at least 1,000 jobs within a year, Oxford Economics found sustained local growth over five years. Unemployment rates fell by 0.37 percentage points while new business formation increased by 5%. Additionally, average weekly wages rose by 2.6%, underscoring Amazon’s ongoing role in strengthening regional economies.
Williams serves as Mayor of Union City and is a former president of the National League of Cities. His leadership roles have focused on municipal governance and economic development initiatives, including regional planning and partnerships with local employers and workforce programs.
