UGA Presents will host musician Rhiannon Giddens on April 28 at Hodgson Concert Hall as part of its 30th anniversary season.
Giddens, a two-time Grammy Award winner and Pulitzer Prize recipient, is recognized for her influential role in expanding the boundaries of folk music. She last performed in Athens in 2024 as artistic director of the Silkroad Ensemble.
Her work draws from centuries-old musical traditions while engaging with contemporary styles. Central to her artistry is highlighting voices and histories that have often been overlooked, offering new perspectives on the origins of American folk and roots music. Giddens will be joined by Dirk Powell, Niwel Tsumbu, and Jason Sypher for this performance. The event is supported by Deana and Steven Jones, Sandy Strother Hudson and Cecil C. Hudson, and Brad and Vera Tucker.
Giddens’s latest album, “You’re the One,” features entirely original songs produced with Jack Splash. The album blends elements of folk, blues, country, gospel, and jazz—demonstrating her wide-ranging musical interests while remaining rooted in tradition. Her work has received praise for emotional depth and stylistic variety.
In addition to performing, Giddens composes for opera, ballet, and film; she is also a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant recipient and was named one of NPR’s 25 Most Influential Women Musicians of the 21st Century.
