The Home Depot has announced a new partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation to support global reforestation and biodiversity projects. As part of this collaboration, The Home Depot will contribute to the reforestation of 2,000 acres by 2028. This area is comparable to more than 800 of its retail stores.
The initial phase of the project includes planting over 500 acres focused on restoring longleaf pine habitats in Florida and Texas, rebuilding biodiversity in Brazil’s Amazon and Atlantic forests, and preserving wildlife habitats for long-term forest regeneration.
According to The Home Depot, sustainability is a key part of its business strategy. “Our sustainable forestry commitment helps support biodiversity, watershed health, and ecosystem resilience, establishing sustainability from the forest canopy to our aisles. Reforestation is a vital step in preserving necessary forests and biodiversity for future generations,” the company stated.
The company also encourages its suppliers to adopt long-term reforestation practices. For example, some seasonal suppliers plant three new Christmas trees for every one harvested.
In addition to environmental stewardship through forestry initiatives, The Home Depot aims to help customers reduce energy costs by offering energy-efficient products. Through its Eco Actions program—which provides information about sustainable products and project ideas—the retailer expects customers will save an additional $375 million in energy costs by the end of 2028. Since 2023, total customer savings are projected at around $1 billion.
Looking ahead, The Home Depot emphasized its ongoing commitment: “Going forward, The Home Depot remains anchored in its effort to Operate Sustainably and will continue to strive to reduce our impact on the environment, partner with others to invest in the environment, and improve our customers’ lives with more efficient and sustainable products.”
