The U.S. Census Bureau has released new data from the 2024 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), which provides detailed information on income and participation in assistance programs among individuals and households across the United States. The SIPP is a longitudinal survey, collecting data from the same participants over time to track changes in areas such as economic well-being, family dynamics, education, assets, health insurance coverage, child care, and food security.

The latest release includes tables showing receipt of various forms of assistance by demographic characteristics. These include Social Security; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); Supplemental Security Income (SSI); retirement income; unemployment insurance; free and reduced-price school meals; Veterans Administration (VA) benefits; and child support.

Additionally, wealth and asset ownership data are available at both national and state levels. These tables provide measures related to home equity, retirement accounts, vehicle debt, credit card debt, student loans, and other financial indicators across different social and household groups.

A brief titled “Wealth of Households: 2023” uses information from the 2024 SIPP to examine differences in rates of asset holding and debt as well as variations in median household wealth based on factors like education level and income.

Another brief called “Monthly and Episodic Poverty: 2023” analyzes monthly poverty rates along with episodic poverty—defined as being in poverty for two or more consecutive months—and examines how long different demographic groups experience poverty. This report highlights unique aspects of SIPP’s approach to measuring poverty.

Further details about these findings can be found on the SIPP website or through the SIPP Library. Additional resources such as Data Dictionaries, an online codebook, and an updated user guide are also available to help users understand the data.
