The U.S. Census Bureau has published new data on state-to-state migration flows and place of birth for the year 2024. The information, drawn from the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates, provides insights into patterns of geographic mobility across the United States.
The State-to-State Migration Flows table package includes two key sets of data. The first set, “State-to-State Migration Flows,” gives estimates on how many people moved between each of the 50 states, as well as movements involving the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and international arrivals to the United States. The second set, “State of Residence by Place of Birth,” offers estimates on where people currently live in relation to their place of birth within these jurisdictions.
According to the Census Bureau, geographic mobility is defined as movement both within and across boundaries. These new statistics are designed to help policymakers, researchers, and others understand migration trends throughout the country.
