The U.S. Census Bureau released on April 16 new summary statistics and data tables from the 2025 Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll (ASPEP), offering a detailed look at state and local government employment across the country.
The release is significant because it provides comprehensive information used by federal, state, and local governments as well as education and research organizations to analyze government employment trends and develop economic indicators such as the government component of gross domestic product.
According to the announcement, the survey presents data on full- and part-time employees, full-time equivalent positions, and gross monthly payroll for March 2025. The figures are broken down by various governmental functions including financial administration, other government administration, highways, and air transportation.
The new release also features an individual unit file that contains all collected data items organized by code within ASPEP. This file includes responses from each governmental unit along with descriptive details.
In addition to publishing new figures for 2025, the Census Bureau made available revised tables for both 2023 and 2024. A graphic titled ‘Public Sector Employment per 10,000 People in Selected States: 2025’ was also released to highlight top state and local government functions during that year.
