The U.S. Census Bureau has released the latest Business Formation Statistics (BFS) for July 2025. The BFS offer updated information on new business applications and formations across the United States. This monthly data product is produced by the Census Bureau in collaboration with economists from several institutions, including the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame.

According to the agency, “The BFS provide timely and high frequency information on new business applications and formations in the United States.” The dataset includes both seasonally adjusted and nonseasonally adjusted statistics at national, regional, and state levels.

In addition to its standard release, the Census Bureau has published Monthly Puerto Rico Business Applications as an experimental product. This new series uses similar methodology as existing BFS data and covers four monthly business application series specific to Puerto Rico.
