The U.S. Census Bureau has released new data from the Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS), which measures ongoing business conditions and projections across the United States. The survey includes information from businesses with multiple locations and is designed to complement other economic surveys by collecting data on revenues, employees, hours worked, and inventories.
The BTOS covers all employer businesses in the country except for farms. It aims to provide a detailed picture of the economy by delivering timely data every two weeks. The survey offers insights at both geographic and industry subsector levels, helping track how events such as natural disasters or economic crises affect businesses and how recovery efforts progress.
Approximately 1.2 million businesses participate in the BTOS, with data collection occurring biweekly. Businesses are divided into six panels of about 200,000 each; each panel reports once every 12 weeks over a year-long period. According to estimates from the Census Bureau, completing the survey takes an average respondent about nine minutes.
Results from the BTOS are released every two weeks and are available by sector, state, and for the 25 largest metropolitan statistical areas. These results provide essential real-time data for officials at all levels of government to support policymaking and decision-making processes. Businesses also use this information to inform their own economic strategies.
