UGA Presents will host a screening of the film “Naqoyqatsi” on January 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Ciné, located at 234 W. Hancock Avenue in Athens. The event is part of UGA Presents’ ongoing season, which features international touring artists and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
“Naqoyqatsi,” released in 2002, is the third film in the Qatsi trilogy directed by Godfrey Reggio. The film’s score was composed by Philip Glass and features cello performances by Yo-Yo Ma. According to organizers, the title comes from the Hopi language and is translated as “life of war” or “civilized violence,” representing themes of competition, conflict, and rapid changes in modern society.
The movie uses a non-narrative format with visual montages that depict humanity’s transition from nature-based societies to those shaped by technology and virtual realities.
After the screening, there will be a panel discussion including James Kim, assistant professor of cello at UGA’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music; Cristina “Trinity” Vélez-Justo, assistant professor of music and director of the film scoring certificate; and Mark Mobley, director of marketing and communications for the UGA Performing Arts Center.
Tickets are available through Ciné’s website (athenscine.com) with general admission priced at $11, student tickets at $9, and member tickets at $8. More information about other events organized by UGA Presents can be found at pac.uga.edu.
