The University of Georgia reached a significant milestone during the 2024-2025 academic year, securing its 52nd national championship in team sports. The university began the year with 48 championships and added four more through strong performances across several athletic programs.

The first title of the year came from the equestrian team, followed by victories in women’s indoor tennis and outdoor tennis. The women’s outdoor track and field team then captured the final championship of the season in Eugene, Oregon. This achievement tied Georgia’s record for most national championships won in a single academic year, matching a mark set in 1999.

Georgia’s total of 52 national championships spans eight sports, with women’s teams accounting for 34 titles. The equestrian program has led nationally since its inception, earning eight National Collegiate Equestrian Association titles since 2003.

In tennis, both men’s and women’s teams have been successful. The men’s program has won eight national titles, including two indoor championships and a streak of four consecutive overall titles from 2006 to 2008. The women’s team also boasts eight team titles, including both indoor and outdoor championships in 2025. Dasha Vidmanova contributed significantly to these wins by securing NCAA team, singles, and doubles national championships during her time at Georgia.

Baseball is considered one of Georgia’s oldest varsity sports, dating back to its first season in 1886. The baseball team claimed its only NCAA championship in 1990 after overcoming a challenging end to their regular season and winning the College World Series against Oklahoma State.

The football program achieved an undefeated season in 1942 but did not claim that title until decades later. Another notable win came under Coach Vince Dooley during the 1980 season. More recently, Kirby Smart led Georgia to consecutive national championships in football in 2021 and 2022.

Women’s swimming and diving saw success under coach Jack Bauerle starting in 1979. His teams earned seven NCAA championships along with numerous SEC titles while producing Olympians who collectively earned nearly forty medals.

Gymnastics stands out as Georgia’s most decorated sport with ten national titles under former head coach Suzanne Yoculan between 1987 and 2009.

Men’s golf dates back to the early twentieth century; it secured national championships in both 1999 and 2005. On the women’s side, three Bulldogs have won individual golf titles since the team’s founding in 1967; they took home a team championship in 2001.

Track and field has produced multiple individual champions on both men’s and women’s teams over many decades. Notably, Spec Towns was an Olympic gold medalist for Georgia men’s track while Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie became a five-time Olympian for the Bahamas after winning four individual collegiate titles at UGA. The men captured their only team title so far in this sport in 2018; meanwhile, the women have taken indoor (2018) and outdoor (2025) crowns.

“Vince Dooley with the 1980 Football National Championship Trophy.
Kirby Smart hoists the CFP National Championship Trophy, representing the Bulldogs’ second title in a row and fourth all time, following Georgia’s 63-7 dismantling of TCU, Jan. 9, 2023.”

“The Georgia gymnastics team won its tenth national title in 2009.”

“The Georgia women’s track and field team’s 2025 outdoor title is one of four national championships won by Bulldogs teams during the year.”

The University of Georgia continues to be recognized as one of the leading public universities for athletics achievements nationwide.
