The University of Georgia has begun accepting nominations for its annual Footsteps Award, which honors graduates who reflect the pioneering legacy of Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Hamilton Holmes, and Mary Frances Early. These three individuals played key roles in integrating the university.

Nominations are open to UGA alumni, faculty, staff, and students. Those interested can submit a nomination by filling out an online form at alumni.uga.edu/footsteps-award. The deadline for submissions is February 13. The recipient will be announced later in the spring.

The Footsteps Award recognizes a graduate whose impact is felt across different parts of their community. A selection committee made up of UGA faculty, staff, alumni, and students will choose the honoree. The award will be presented during the 1961 Club Celebration this summer.

This year marks the fourth time the award has been given. Previous recipients include Eugenia Harvey (2022), Richard Dunn and Xernona Thomas (2023), Justice Robert Benham (2024), and Dr. Michael V. Smith, founder and CEO of Marti Health.

“Our alumni continue to inspire us with the ways they lead, serve and uplift their communities,” said Adam Roell, UGA’s executive director of alumni relations. “The Footsteps Award shines a light on those who extend the legacy of Hunter-Gault, Holmes and Early, proving that the Bulldog spirit reaches far beyond campus.”

Questions about the award can be directed to alumni@uga.edu.
